Empowering Students on Safer Internet Day

Safer Internet Day took on a powerful dimension this year as hundreds of students actively engaged in enlightening workshops on gambling awareness conducted by the renowned organisation GameCare. The impactful sessions unfolded at both the Station Plaza and Ore Valley Campus, capturing the attention and curiosity of students eager to navigate the complexities of online interactions responsibly.

The workshops were designed to equip students with the knowledge and tools necessary to make informed decisions about their online activities, particularly in the realm of gambling. GameCare’s expertise shone through as they delivered engaging presentations that not only raised awareness about the potential risks associated with gambling but also provided valuable insights into fostering a safer online environment.

A noteworthy aspect of the Safer Internet Day activities was the participation of East Sussex Police, reinforcing the collaborative effort to ensure a secure digital space for everyone. The presence of the police served as a reminder of the importance of responsible online behavior and the legal implications of engaging in harmful activities.

In a bid to further emphasise the potential consequences of unchecked online interactions, Station Plaza campus also showcased episodes from Netflix's popular series, "The Circle." The show, known for its exploration of social dynamics in a digital space, provided students with thought-provoking scenarios, encouraging them to critically evaluate their own online choices.

The combination of GamCare’s insightful workshops, police involvement, Change Grow Live, Veritas, YGAM and thought-provoking media content created a holistic approach to Safer Internet Day. Students not only gained practical knowledge about gambling awareness but also developed a deeper understanding of the broader implications of their online actions.

As we reflect on the success of Safer Internet Day, it becomes evident that fostering a safer digital environment requires a multi-faceted approach. By educating and engaging students through workshops, involving local authorities, and utilizing relevant media content, we take significant strides towards empowering the next generation to navigate the online world responsibly and conscientiously.
