Rhythms of Unity

East Sussex College Students Embrace African Drumming for Black History Month

In a vibrant celebration of diversity and cultural appreciation, students from Lewes and Hastings campuses recently came together to participate in exhilarating African drumming workshops, marking the onset of Black History Month.

The event provided an invaluable opportunity for young minds to delve into the rich tapestry of African heritage through the universal language of music.

Led by seasoned Djembe and cultural musician, Ali Bangoura, the workshops transported participants on a rhythmic journey across the African continent to Guinea, Ali’s home country. From the thunderous beats of Djembe drums originating in West Africa, students were immersed in an awe-inspiring fusion of sound and history.

The experience went beyond mere musical instruction. It served as a window into the soul of African culture, offering a deeper understanding of the significance of rhythm, communication, and community. Through hands-on learning, students discovered the power of unity that lies within the pulse of every beat.

The impact of these workshops extends beyond the confines of a single event, highlighting the importance of such initiatives in fostering inclusivity, empathy, and appreciation for diverse heritages. Initiatives like these help encourage young minds shape a future of unity and understanding, breaking down the divides and celebrating our differences.
